The Story Behind the Art:
When I lived in Washington State, I used to go whale watching with my mom and sisters as well as some of my friends. The first time I went whale watching was on the Oregon while camping along the coast, and went on my first whale watch cruise in the Puget Sound in Washington State. When I went on the whale watch cruise, I saw several orca whales in the Puget Sound. They are very social animals and enjoy showing off with jumping or breaching out of the ocean waters as well as coming up close to the boat to show off their cute baby whale calves. I have enjoyed the magnificence of whales since I was a little girl, and I still remember when I was in elementary school and got the chance to visit the Pacific Science Center in Seattle Washington to view the animatronic whale exhibit. Even though the whales where robotic representation of whales, it was still a fascinating sight! After moving to California, I have continued to go whale watching when I get the opportunity, and have shared the experience with my husband and son.
We have gone whale watching in the Monterey Bay and we got the chance to see a humpback whale breach (jump out of) the ocean water. It is so amazing to see such a giant animal leaping out of the ocean! Ever since seeing the humpback whale leap out of the ocean depths, I have wanted to paint a humpback whale swimming with her calf. Within the painting, "Mother Whale" it illustrates a mother humpback whale guiding her calf to the surface to take its first breath.
